What should you know about transvaginal ultrasound preparation?

Ask whether your bladder should be empty or partly full; the answer can differ depending on the reason for the scan and whether an abdominal scan is also planned. You may be asked to change from the waist down and lie in a supported position. A covered probe is then gently inserted into the vagina to view the pelvis.

Tell the clinic about pregnancy possibility, menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, recent surgery, allergies, mobility needs or a previous distressing examination. These details can affect positioning, timing and the support offered. Menstrual bleeding does not automatically mean the scan must be cancelled, but the clinic can advise for your appointment.

Wear clothing that is easy to remove and bring any referral or medication information the clinic requested. Arrive with enough time to ask questions. Confirm who will perform the scan, whether a chaperone is available, how consent will be checked, and how you can request a pause.

During the examination, use slow breathing and tell the clinician about pressure or pain. You can ask for an explanation before each step. Afterward, check how results will be shared and whether you need a follow-up appointment.

Contact the clinic about persistent pain, unexpected bleeding, fever or dizziness after the scan. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or sudden weakness. If pregnancy is possible, pain on one side with bleeding needs prompt assessment for ectopic pregnancy.
