Short answer

With irregular periods, track several body signs together because calendar dates alone may not predict ovulation reliably.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Best approach
Combine mucus, temperature and test observations.
Apps
Predictions may be less useful with variable cycles.
Pregnancy prevention
Use contraception rather than cycle tracking alone.

Why timing is harder

Ovulation is the release of an egg, but it may not happen at the same point in every cycle. Bleeding dates can shift when hormones, stress, weight changes, thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome or the transition towards menopause affect the cycle. Some irregular cycles do not include ovulation; this is called anovulation.

A temperature rise after ovulation, changes in cervical mucus and a positive urine ovulation test can each provide clues. None gives a complete picture on its own. Apps can record observations, but an app prediction is only an estimate when cycles vary.

Ways to track

Record the first day of each bleed, its duration, cervical mucus changes, pelvic sensations and any ovulation-test results. Take basal temperature consistently after waking and look for a sustained pattern rather than one isolated reading.

If you are trying to conceive, sex every few days can reduce the need to identify one exact fertile day. If you are avoiding pregnancy, do not rely on irregular-cycle tracking alone; use a dependable contraceptive method and ask a clinician for advice.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if periods remain irregular, stop unexpectedly, become very heavy or painful, or you have difficulty conceiving. Seek urgent help for bleeding that makes you faint, severe one-sided pain or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern suggests anovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause or premature ovarian insufficiency, and whether blood tests or an ultrasound would help. Discuss your pregnancy plans before starting treatment.
