Short answer

Hair shedding after delivery commonly reflects a temporary shift in the hair cycle, but persistent or patchy loss deserves assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Diffuse shedding rather than one sharply bald patch
Gentle habits
Avoid tight pulling, harsh processing, and rough brushing
Assessment trigger
Patchy loss, scalp inflammation, or ongoing heavy shedding

Why shedding can follow delivery

Pregnancy can keep more hairs in the growing phase; after delivery, several can enter the resting and shedding phase together. Hair may come out during washing or brushing, and the overall density can look reduced. This pattern is called telogen effluvium. It should be distinguished from alopecia areata, pattern hair loss, scalp ringworm, or traction alopecia, especially when loss is patchy, the scalp is inflamed, or hairs are broken.

Helpful care

Use gentle shampooing, avoid tight hairstyles and frequent heat or chemical treatments, and handle wet hair carefully. Eat regular balanced meals and mention heavy bleeding, restrictive eating, fatigue, or other health changes to your clinician. Do not start hair-loss medicines or supplements without checking whether they are appropriate for you, particularly if you are breastfeeding or planning another pregnancy.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if shedding is severe, continues without improvement, forms smooth bald patches, or comes with scalp scale, redness, pain, or broken hairs. Seek advice sooner if you also have marked tiredness, dizziness, temperature intolerance, or changes in menstrual bleeding, because a broader health issue may be contributing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits telogen effluvium, whether blood tests are appropriate, how to protect new growth, and which treatments are compatible with your recovery and feeding plans.

Questions people ask

Does postpartum shedding mean permanent hair loss?

Not necessarily; a temporary hair-cycle shift is common, although other causes should be checked when the pattern is unusual or persistent.

Should I take a hair supplement?

Discuss supplements with a clinician first, because the right choice depends on your diet, health, medicines, and feeding plans.
