Three-level ACDF surgery: what to know

ACDF means anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Through the front of the neck, the surgeon reaches the affected disc spaces, removes disc material and other tissue pressing on nerves or the spinal cord, and places spacers to maintain height. A three-level procedure covers three adjacent or selected cervical levels, so the plan depends on the location of compression and neck stability.

The operation may be considered for symptoms such as arm pain, numbness, weakness, or spinal cord-related changes when appropriate non-operative care has not provided enough relief. It is not a way to restore a damaged nerve instantly; improvement may unfold gradually and some symptoms may persist.

Ask for clear instructions about medicines, smoking or nicotine, eating before surgery, wound care, and the use of a collar if prescribed. Arrange help with transport and early daily tasks. After surgery, follow lifting, driving, walking, and exercise limits exactly. Short walks are often introduced as tolerated, while neck movement and strengthening are added according to review. Swallowing discomfort or throat irritation can occur early; report symptoms that are severe or worsening rather than changing treatment yourself.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing neck swelling, wound drainage, fever, worsening weakness, new loss of coordination, or pain that is difficult to control. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, rapidly expanding swelling, or sudden severe neurological change. New swallowing difficulty that prevents fluids from passing also needs urgent guidance.
