Things to help with acid reflux

Short answer
Acid reflux may improve by changing meal timing, reducing personal triggers, and using treatment advised by a clinician. It happens when stomach contents move back into the food pipe, causing burning, sour fluid, throat irritation, or cough. Symptoms can be worse after meals, when bending, or when lying down.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can contribute to reflux
A weak or poorly timed valve between the stomach and food pipe allows backflow. A Hiatus Hernia, increased abdominal pressure including Obesity, large meals, and lying down soon after eating may contribute. Reflux can also appear as a Chronic Cough or disturb sleep without obvious heartburn. Chest Tightness and Abdominal Pain have other possible causes, so do not assume every episode is reflux.
Steps to try
Notice which foods, drinks, and habits trigger symptoms rather than removing many foods at once. Choose smaller meals, eat slowly, and avoid lying down soon after eating. If night symptoms occur, ask a clinician or pharmacist about safe ways to raise the upper body and about medicines such as antacids or acid-reducing treatment. Stop smoking if you smoke, and seek support for weight changes when appropriate. Keep a short symptom and meal diary.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review when reflux is frequent, keeps returning, causes Difficulty Sleeping, or does not settle with sensible changes. Seek emergency help for severe or new Chest Tightness, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Prompt assessment is needed for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, or unexplained weight loss.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit Acid Reflux, how long to try a treatment, whether another medicine is contributing, and whether a Hiatus Hernia or another cause needs checking. Describe night symptoms, cough, swallowing changes, and any chest discomfort.

Can acid reflux cause a cough?
