A smooth, sharply defined patch without scale can occur with alopecia areata. A patch with broken hairs, itch, scale, tenderness, or crusting may suggest infection or inflammation, including scalp ringworm. Pulling from tight hairstyles can affect the hairline and temples, while rubbing or picking can damage hairs.

Hair may regrow when the trigger settles, but the timeline and treatment depend on the cause. A clinician may examine the scalp closely, look at broken hairs, and decide whether testing is needed. A bald patch is a visible symptom, not proof of one particular condition.

Take a clear photograph and note when the patch appeared, whether it is enlarging, and whether anyone else at home has an itchy scalp or similar lesions. Use gentle hair care, avoid tight styles and shared combs or hats, and do not apply strong products to broken or inflamed skin without advice.

Arrange an assessment rather than assuming the patch will resolve. Treatment may involve medicine for inflammation or infection; a hair transplant is generally not the first step while the cause is active or uncertain.

Seek prompt care if the patch is spreading quickly, painful, swollen, draining, heavily scaly, or associated with fever. Arrange timely review for multiple patches, eyebrow or eyelash loss, or scarring and shiny skin, because ongoing follicle damage needs attention.
