What should you know about telegenic hair loss?

Short answer
Telegenic hair loss describes noticeable shedding after more hairs shift into the resting phase of the growth cycle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Diffuse shedding rather than one sharply defined patch
- Useful clue
- A health event may have occurred before shedding became visible
What it means
People may notice extra hair on a pillow, in the shower or in a brush. Shedding can follow illness with fever, surgery, major stress, rapid weight change, childbirth or a change in medication, often after a delay. The scalp usually looks normal rather than scarred, and hair may thin broadly instead of forming one sharply defined patch. A clinician will ask when shedding began, review recent health events and examine the scalp. Other causes include Telogen Effluvium, pattern hair loss, Alopecia Areata, scalp infection and Traction Alopecia.
What you can do
Eat regular balanced meals, handle hair gently and avoid tight styles, harsh chemical processing and vigorous brushing while shedding is active. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own; bring its name and the start date to your appointment. Blood tests may be considered when symptoms or history suggest a nutritional, thyroid or other medical contributor. Treatment addresses the trigger, while regrowth is monitored over time. Finasteride Treatment is relevant only for selected pattern hair-loss diagnoses, not for every episode of shedding.
When to seek care
Book a medical assessment when shedding is sudden, persistent, distressing or accompanied by scalp pain, scale, itching, broken hairs or smooth patches. Seek prompt care for hair loss with severe illness, marked weakness, unexplained weight change or signs of infection. Early examination can distinguish diffuse shedding from conditions needing specific treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what event may have preceded the shedding, whether the pattern is diffuse or patchy, whether tests are useful, and how you will track regrowth.

Questions people ask
Does shedding mean the hair follicle is permanently damaged?
Diffuse shedding often reflects a temporary shift in the growth cycle, but examination is needed because several conditions can look similar.
Should I stop my medicines?
No. Discuss possible medication effects with the prescriber before making any change.
