What should you know about TE hair loss?

Short answer
TE hair loss usually refers to telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding pattern that can follow illness, stress, or another body change.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How telogen effluvium presents
Telogen effluvium causes more hairs than usual to enter the resting phase and shed later. People often notice extra hair on a pillow, in a brush, or during washing, with thinning spread across the scalp rather than a single smooth patch. A trigger may have happened weeks or months before shedding becomes obvious. Possible triggers include a significant illness, surgery, rapid weight change, severe stress, or a major hormonal shift. The shedding pattern itself does not identify the trigger, so a clinician may review your history and examine the scalp.
What to do about increased shedding
Record when shedding began and any illness, medication change, restrictive diet, or stressful event beforehand. Eat regularly, handle hair gently, and avoid tight styles, harsh chemical processing, and vigorous brushing while the scalp is shedding. Do not start supplements or hair-loss medicine without checking whether you need them. Hair shedding can also occur with Alopecia Areata, pattern hair loss, Scalp Ringworm, or Traction Alopecia, which need different care.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if shedding is sudden, severe, persistent, or accompanied by scalp pain, scaling, broken hairs, itching, or smooth bald patches. Seek prompt care for a scalp that is very inflamed, draining, or tender. A clinician can consider Female Pattern Hair Loss or Male Pattern Hair Loss when thinning follows a patterned distribution, and may discuss Telogen Effluvium as a possible explanation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern your scalp examination shows, whether blood tests or a medication review could help find a trigger, and how to track recovery. Ask whether Finasteride Treatment is relevant to your diagnosis; it is not a general treatment for every type of shedding.

Questions people ask
Is TE hair loss the same as permanent baldness?
Telogen effluvium is a shedding pattern and may improve, but the outlook depends on the trigger and whether another hair condition is present.
Should I stop washing my hair?
No. Gentle washing is generally preferable to avoiding washing; use a mild routine and follow advice if the scalp is inflamed.
