What should you know about TCHP chemo?

TCHP brings together two chemotherapy medicines and two targeted medicines. Docetaxel and carboplatin interfere with cancer-cell growth in different ways. Trastuzumab and pertuzumab target a HER2-related signal on some cancer cells. The combination is commonly discussed in HER2-positive breast cancer care, but your suitability depends on the pathology report, stage, previous treatment, and general health. These medicines are usually given through a vein in an oncology unit.

Your team may check blood counts, kidney and liver function, symptoms, and heart function as appropriate. Common effects can include tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, reduced blood-cell counts, hair loss, mouth changes, appetite changes, and altered taste. Trastuzumab and pertuzumab can affect heart function, while treatment may also cause an infusion reaction.

Take only the premedicines and supportive medicines prescribed for you, and follow instructions about steroids, anti-sickness treatment, and infection precautions. Tell the team about heart symptoms, breathlessness, swelling, allergies, numbness, diarrhoea, and all medicines or supplements. Arrange practical support for infusion days and keep a written symptom record. Ask before receiving a vaccine or starting a new medicine during treatment. Attend scheduled blood tests even when you feel well.

Contact your oncology team urgently for fever or chills, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, painful mouth ulcers that stop you drinking, or worsening breathlessness. During an infusion, report rash, wheezing, chest discomfort, dizziness, or sudden back pain immediately. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new confusion, or swelling of the face or throat. Ask your unit which number to use overnight.

Ask why each medicine is included, how the cycle is organised, and which tests are required before treatment. Ask how heart function will be monitored, which side effects should be reported the same day, and how missed or delayed treatment is handled. Discuss fertility, contraception, work, travel, and safe support at home if these apply to you.
