Short answer

T/Gel may soothe some itchy scalps by loosening scale and reducing irritation, but the cause of the itch determines whether it is suitable.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it may help
Scale and irritation linked with some scalp conditions.
What it cannot identify
The shampoo does not diagnose the cause of itch.
Use carefully
Avoid eyes, broken skin, and forceful scratching.

Why the scalp may itch

An itchy scalp can accompany dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, folliculitis, or head lice. T/Gel is a medicated shampoo commonly used to help reduce scaling and irritation, but it will not treat every cause. Lice require a different approach, while inflamed follicles or thick psoriasis plaques may need other treatment.

Fragrance, hair products, dyes, scratching, and very hot water can also aggravate the scalp. Persistent itch, pain, crusting, or hair loss deserves an examination rather than repeated product changes.

How to use it thoughtfully

Follow the product directions and your clinician’s advice. Wet the scalp, work the shampoo through the affected skin, allow the advised contact time, and rinse thoroughly; avoid the eyes and broken skin. Stop and seek advice if marked burning, swelling, or a new rash develops. Use gentle products between medicated washes and avoid forceful scratching. A clinician may instead recommend medicated shampoo therapy or head lice treatment after identifying the cause.

When to seek care

Arrange a review if itch continues despite appropriate use, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by thick scale, pus, tender bumps, bleeding, or patchy hair loss. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, widespread hives, breathing trouble, or rapidly worsening pain. Children, pregnant people, and anyone with a history of product reactions should check suitability before use.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What is causing my scalp itch? Is a coal-tar shampoo appropriate for my scalp and hair type? How often should I use it? Do I need a different treatment for psoriasis, lice, or folliculitis? What changes would mean I should stop?
