Symptoms of pneumonia in adults

Pneumonia is an infection and inflammation affecting the air sacs of the lungs. Cough may be dry or may bring up phlegm. Fever, chills, sweating, weakness, and reduced appetite can occur, while breathing may feel faster or more effortful. Some adults mainly notice fatigue, confusion, or a decline in their usual function, especially if they are older or already unwell. COVID-19 and influenza can produce overlapping symptoms, so symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a clinical assessment if you have a new cough with fever, breathlessness, chest pain on breathing, or a clear drop in energy. Note when symptoms began and whether they are improving or worsening. Drink fluids if tolerated, rest, and use only medicines that are suitable for you and taken as directed. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, long-term lung or heart conditions, immune problems, and regular medicines, because these details can affect the assessment.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to remain awake, or severe chest pain. Seek prompt care if you are coughing blood, becoming rapidly weaker, or unable to drink. Sepsis is a serious response to infection; rapidly worsening symptoms, clammy skin, or a strong sense that something is seriously wrong require urgent attention.
