What should you know about symptoms of heat induced asthma?

Hot, humid air can make breathing feel harder, while outdoor pollutants, dust and seasonal allergens may irritate sensitive airways. Symptoms may begin during activity or after coming indoors. Some people notice nighttime cough, a whistling sound when breathing out, or reduced ability to exercise. These features can occur with asthma, but they do not confirm the diagnosis on their own.

Stop strenuous activity and move to a cooler, cleaner-air setting. Sit upright, stay calm and use your prescribed reliever inhaler according to your asthma action plan. Avoid smoke and known triggers. If symptoms recur in heat, record the setting, activity, timing and response to prescribed medicine so a clinician can review the pattern.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, inability to speak comfortably, blue or grey lips, exhaustion, confusion, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening or not responding to the prescribed reliever. A nebuliser treatment may be used by clinicians in urgent care, but home treatment should follow an individual action plan.

Ask whether your symptoms fit asthma and whether lung function testing is appropriate. Discuss an action plan for hot days, inhaler technique, exercise, air quality and possible allergic triggers such as rhinitis or dust mites.
