Symptoms of gout in the fingers

Gout inflammation can affect a finger joint when urate crystals trigger a strong local response. The joint may become visibly swollen, hot, and difficult to bend or straighten. Pain can interfere with typing, fastening clothing, cooking, or holding objects. Gout is not the only explanation for a swollen finger: infection, injury, osteoarthritis, and other inflammatory conditions can produce similar signs. A physical examination and, when appropriate, testing help distinguish them.

Remove rings early if swelling is developing, rest the hand, and keep it raised when comfortable. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may reduce discomfort for brief periods. Do not squeeze, massage, or puncture the swollen area. Take only medicines that have been recommended for you, especially if you have kidney disease or take other medicines. Note the affected joint, onset, temperature, and any previous episodes.

Arrange assessment for a first episode, repeated finger flares, or swelling that limits hand use. Seek urgent care if a finger joint is hot and swollen with fever, spreading redness, pus, severe illness, numbness, or a ring that cannot be removed, because infection or reduced circulation requires prompt attention.
