What should you know about stye treatment boots?

A stye, also called a hordeolum, is a tender inflamed spot around an eyelash follicle or an eyelid oil gland. Boots are footwear, so “stye treatment boots” is not a recognised eye treatment. The wording may be a typing or search error, or it may refer to a retailer or service unrelated to the eye. A stye can cause local swelling, soreness, watering, crusting, or a small pus-filled point. It is different from a deeper, usually less tender blocked gland, although the two can look similar.

Wash your hands before touching the eyelid. Hold a clean cloth comfortably warm against the closed eye for several minutes, refreshing its warmth as needed, and repeat this through the day. Do not squeeze, pierce, or try to drain the lump. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has settled, and do not share towels, pillowcases, or cosmetics. Clean any discharge gently with fresh water and a clean pad for each wipe. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an eye product is suitable; do not put skin creams or non-eye medicines in the eye.

Arrange a GP Consultation if the swelling keeps enlarging, the redness spreads beyond the eyelid, the eye becomes difficult to open, or the lump does not improve with simple care. Seek urgent medical help for vision changes, marked light sensitivity, severe eye pain, pain when moving the eye, fever, or swelling around the eye. Eye Discharge or Red Eye can have causes other than a stye and may need a separate assessment.
