What should you know about black eye from stye?

A stye is a tender, localised lump caused by inflammation around an eyelid gland or lash follicle. Swelling can spread through the lid, and bruised-looking skin may appear if the area has been rubbed or irritated. The lump often sits at the lid margin and may have a small yellow point.

A dark area around the eye is not specific to a stye. Trauma, a spreading eyelid infection or another eye condition can look similar. Eye Discharge or Red Eye alongside the lump may help a clinician understand the problem, but colour alone cannot do so.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it through the day if comfortable. Wash your hands, keep the lid clean, and do not squeeze, pierce or pop the lump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has settled. Do not share towels or cosmetics.

Arrange a GP Consultation if the lump is not improving, keeps returning, or interferes with daily activities. A clinician can decide whether another treatment or specialist review is needed.

Get urgent help for reduced vision, pain when moving the eye, severe eye pain, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, swelling spreading onto the cheek, marked light sensitivity, or difficulty opening the eye. Seek immediate assessment after an eye injury or chemical exposure.

Ask whether the darkening is consistent with eyelid inflammation or suggests bruising, how often to use warm compresses, and whether you should avoid lenses or cosmetics for longer. Ask what changes would require same-day review.
