Managing postpartum hair loss

Short answer
Postpartum hair loss is often a temporary shedding response to hormonal change; gentle handling, adequate nutrition, and review of persistent loss are sensible steps.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Likely pattern
- Diffuse shedding after a hormonal shift
- Gentle routine
- Loose styles, low heat, careful detangling
- Medical clue
- Patchy loss or scalp symptoms need assessment
Why it can follow birth
Pregnancy can hold many hairs in the growth phase. After birth, those hairs may enter the resting phase together, producing diffuse shedding known as Telogen Effluvium. Hair in the shower or brush can look dramatic even when the scalp has no disease.
A different pattern deserves attention: a round bare patch, heavy scale, inflamed skin, or thinning concentrated at the part may suggest Alopecia Areata, Scalp Ringworm, or Female Pattern Hair Loss. Postpartum timing is useful context, not a diagnosis by itself.
Ways to reduce strain
Choose loose styles, postpone aggressive colouring or straightening, and use low heat. Detangle carefully and keep the scalp clean without scratching. Eat regular meals containing protein and ask your maternity or primary-care clinician before taking iron, biotin, or other supplements.
Note the date shedding began and photograph the part and hairline in similar light. A clinician can consider thyroid, iron, medication, or nutritional contributors when your history or examination suggests them. Hair Loss provides broader context for tracking change.
Signs that need review
Seek an appointment if thinning is strongly patchy, the scalp is painful or scaly, or shedding remains concerning rather than settling. Get prompt care for pus, marked redness, or rapidly expanding bare areas. Mention breastfeeding and all medicines when discussing treatment.
Prepare for the visit
Ask whether your pattern fits Telogen Effluvium, whether thyroid or iron testing is suitable, and which products are safe during breastfeeding. Ask how Female Pattern Hair Loss would be recognised and when you should return if density does not improve.

Questions people ask
Can breastfeeding cause hair loss?
The postpartum hormonal transition is a common context for shedding. Breastfeeding, nutrition, medicines, and other health factors should be discussed if loss is persistent or severe.
Should I take a hair supplement after birth?
Only take a supplement recommended for your situation; unnecessary high-dose products can be unsuitable, particularly during breastfeeding.
