What should you know about spotting between periods endometriosis?

Endometriosis is tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside the womb. It responds to hormonal changes and may cause inflammation, bleeding within the pelvis and scar tissue. Some people notice spotting before a period, after it, or at other points in the cycle. Endometriosis commonly presents with painful periods, ongoing pelvic pain, pain during sex or difficulty getting pregnant, but spotting alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Bleeding between periods can also have hormonal, cervical, infection-related or uterine causes. A clinician may ask about cycle timing, bowel or bladder symptoms, fertility goals and previous treatments before deciding whether examination, testing or imaging is useful.

Keep a cycle diary showing spotting, pain, bowel or bladder symptoms, sex-related pain and medicines. Book an appointment if spotting recurs, interferes with daily life, or appears with the symptoms above. Treatment depends on symptoms and pregnancy plans; options may include hormonal treatment such as the Combined Pill or Hormonal Coil, pain support, or specialist review. Surgery is considered selectively, not simply because spotting is present.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, faintness, heavy bleeding, fever, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. Prompt review is also sensible for new bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or pain that prevents normal activity. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether endometriosis is already diagnosed.
