What should you know about spondylosis with myelopathy?

Spondylosis describes changes in discs, joints, and bone. Myelopathy means the spinal cord is being compressed or irritated. This is different from a pinched nerve alone: it may affect hand coordination, balance, walking, and strength in more than one limb.

Symptoms can develop gradually and may include stiff or heavy legs, stumbling, dropping objects, altered sensation, or electric-shock sensations with neck movement. A neurological examination and imaging help show whether the cord has reduced space and whether symptoms fit that finding. Do not rely on pain severity alone; cord problems can progress even when neck pain is modest.

Book a timely medical review for new coordination, balance, or limb-strength changes. Until assessed, avoid activities that provoke jolting, falls, or forceful neck manipulation. Physiotherapy or Exercise Therapy may be appropriate for selected people, but the plan must account for cord involvement. If compression is significant or function is worsening, a spine specialist may discuss decompression, sometimes combined with Spinal Fusion. The choice depends on the level, alignment, stability, and examination findings.

Go to urgent care for rapidly worsening weakness, new inability to walk safely, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin region. After a fall or collision, seek prompt assessment if neck pain is paired with weakness, altered sensation, or reduced coordination.
