Small bumps under the eyes that are not milia

Bumps that are red, tender, or centred on a hair may fit follicle inflammation. Flesh-coloured or pale bumps with a pore-like opening can resemble whiteheads, while itchy skin may point toward irritation or an allergic response. A clinician may also consider less common causes after examining the surface and asking about products, rubbing, sun exposure, and medicines.

Milia themselves are usually firm and pearly, but visual labels are unreliable around the eyes. Avoid assuming that a bump is acne or trying to remove it with a needle. Keeping a short record of onset and triggers can make an assessment more useful.

Use a gentle cleanser, stop newly added eye-area products, and choose non-comedogenic cosmetics if makeup seems to contribute. Do not scrub or squeeze. Because retinoids can irritate eyelid skin and should not enter the eye, discuss topical retinoids with a dermatologist before using them near this area.

If a diagnosed lesion needs removal, a clinician may discuss curettage and cautery or another targeted option. The right treatment depends on the lesion, its location, and your skin history.

Arrange care for a bump that grows, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or remains unexplained. Seek prompt help for vision changes, severe eye pain, rapid swelling, fever, pus, or a widespread allergic reaction. Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or throat.
