Small bumps on the face: understanding milia

Milia are usually firm, smooth, and white or skin-coloured. They often appear around the eyelids, cheeks, nose, or forehead and do not behave like a spot that can be expressed. They form when keratin becomes trapped near the skin surface.

A clinician may distinguish milia from whiteheads, other skin bumps, or a condition affecting the eyelid. New products, skin injury, or some inflammatory rashes can precede milia, although they may also appear without an obvious trigger.

Wash gently, moisturise if the surrounding skin is dry, and use daily sun protection. Avoid needles, pins, harsh scrubs, and squeezing, particularly near the eyes. These actions can cause infection, scarring, or injury to delicate skin.

If the bumps persist or bother you, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss topical retinoids or a controlled procedure such as curettage and cautery. Treatment choice depends on location, number of bumps, skin sensitivity, and whether the diagnosis is certain.

Book an assessment if a bump changes quickly, bleeds, becomes tender, drains, or is difficult to distinguish from a pigmented or eyelid lesion. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, spreading redness, vision changes, or significant eye pain.
