Skin rash from hay fever: what to know

Allergic rhinitis is triggered by inhaled particles such as pollen and commonly causes sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, and watery eyes. Skin contact with pollen, plants, fragrances, detergents or cosmetics can cause itchy patches where the skin was exposed. Hives can appear during an allergy and move to different areas. Eczema, heat rash, insect bites and infection can look similar. Asthma symptoms, facial swelling or throat tightness suggest a broader allergic reaction rather than uncomplicated hay fever.

Note where the rash appears, when it starts, what it looks like and whether it follows outdoor exposure or a product. Rinse exposed skin, change clothes after time outdoors and avoid newly introduced scented products. Use only treatments recommended for your age and health history; a pharmacist can advise on an antihistamine or skin product. Arrange review if the rash persists, recurs, becomes painful or does not fit your usual seasonal symptoms.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, wheezing, faintness or widespread hives with sudden illness. Seek prompt medical care for a fever, pus, marked pain, facial swelling near the eye, a rapidly spreading rash or skin that blisters or peels. A persistent cough or wheeze also deserves assessment, especially if you have asthma.
