How the structures involved in Milia differ from normal

Short answer

For milia-prone skin, use gentle cleansing, non-heavy moisturising, daily sun protection, and professional removal instead of squeezing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical feel
Small, firm, pearly bumps
Avoid
Squeezing or piercing at home
Routine
Mild cleanser, light moisturiser, sunscreen

What milia are

Milia are small, firm, pearly bumps formed when keratin becomes trapped near the skin surface. They commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead and are different from Whiteheads, which involve a blocked pore. Not every small facial bump is milia, so a new, unusual, or irritated lesion may need assessment.

A low-irritation routine

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild product, then apply a light moisturiser that does not sting. Use sunscreen during the day, especially around the eyes where rubbing can cause irritation. Avoid thick occlusive layers if they seem to coincide with new bumps, but do not leave the skin dry and inflamed. Never pierce or squeeze milia at home; a clinician can discuss Topical Retinoids or remove a persistent lesion with Curettage And Cautery when appropriate.

When assessment is useful

Book a review if bumps multiply, become red or tender, recur in the same area, or affect the eyelid margin. Seek prompt care for bleeding, ulceration, marked swelling, or a lesion that changes quickly. Professional assessment is also sensible when you are unsure whether the bumps are milia or another type of Skin Bumps.

Questions for your doctor

Are these bumps milia or another condition? Could my eye products or moisturiser be contributing? Would a retinoid suit my skin? What removal method is appropriate for this location?

Questions people ask

Does oily skin cause milia?

Milia are keratin-filled cysts rather than ordinary oil plugs, although heavy products may irritate or congest some people.

Can I remove milia with a needle?

Home piercing can cause infection, scarring, or injury near the eye, so removal is safer when performed by a trained clinician.
