Sinus headache and light sensitivity: what should you know?

Sinus pressure with light sensitivity may reflect migraine or another cause rather than sinus inflammation alone. Congestion, facial pressure, or watery eyes can accompany migraine, while light sensitivity can also occur with eye problems or more serious illness. The combination should be judged with the timing, severity, fever, neck symptoms, and vision changes.

Migraine commonly produces light sensitivity and may bring nausea, sound sensitivity, or pain that worsens with activity. Conjunctivitis can make bright light uncomfortable when the eye is red, gritty, or discharging. Meningitis is an uncommon but urgent possibility when headache and light sensitivity occur with fever, stiff neck, confusion, drowsiness, or a rapidly worsening illness. Nasal blockage does not rule these possibilities in or out.

Note whether the pain is new, whether one eye is affected, and whether vision is blurred or reduced. Do not rely on the term sinus headache to decide urgency.

Rest in a dim, quiet room, drink fluids, and reduce screen brightness if it worsens discomfort. Do not drive if vision is affected or the headache makes you unsafe. Use pain relief only as directed on the label, and ask a pharmacist to check it against your medicines and health conditions. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or eye drops.

Get emergency help for a sudden extreme headache, fever with a stiff neck, confusion, unusual sleepiness, seizure, new weakness, or difficulty speaking. Seek urgent eye assessment for severe eye pain, marked redness, halos, or reduced vision. Arrange prompt review for a first episode of significant light sensitivity, repeated attacks, or symptoms that are steadily worsening.
