What should you know about single level ACDF?

ACDF means anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Through an approach at the front of the neck, the surgeon removes a damaged disc or other tissue pressing on a nerve or the spinal cord. A spacer supports the disc space while bone healing is encouraged; a plate and screws may help hold the construct. The aim is to reduce pressure and stabilize one cervical level, but existing nerve injury may take time to improve.

Before surgery, review medicines, smoking or nicotine use, swallowing problems and other medical conditions with the surgical team. Arrange help for the early recovery period and follow instructions about wound care, walking, lifting, driving and neck movement. Attend follow-up visits so healing, symptoms and swallowing can be assessed. Rehabilitation is tailored to strength, posture and the demands of daily life.

Seek urgent medical attention for new or worsening weakness, trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe neck swelling. Contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, uncontrolled pain, or a sudden change in arm symptoms. Prompt assessment helps distinguish expected recovery symptoms from complications.

Ask which level is affected, what is compressing the nerve or cord, what implant is planned, how bone healing will be checked, and which activities must wait during recovery.
