Signs of ovarian cysts

Many ovarian cysts cause no noticeable symptoms and are found during an examination or scan. When symptoms occur, discomfort may be dull, one-sided, intermittent, or worse with movement. A larger cyst can create pressure on the bladder or bowel, causing frequent urination, constipation, or a feeling of fullness after eating. Changes in bleeding or cycle timing can also occur. These symptoms have many possible causes, so they do not establish that a cyst is present.

Keep a record of pain, bleeding, cycle dates, digestive changes, and urinary symptoms. Book a medical appointment if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with daily activities. A clinician may recommend a pelvic examination or transvaginal ultrasound, then decide whether monitoring or treatment is suitable. Treatment depends on the cyst's appearance, size, symptoms, age, and pregnancy plans. The combined pill may be discussed in some situations, but it does not suit everyone.

Get urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, faintness, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, or a swollen abdomen. These symptoms can occur with rupture, twisting, or another urgent condition. Seek prompt assessment for new pain during pregnancy or after menopause, or for bleeding that is unusually heavy or persistent.

Ask what the scan shows, whether the cyst is likely to resolve, when follow-up is needed, and which symptoms should prompt immediate review.
