What should you know about side effects of asthma?

Asthma narrows and irritates the airways, making air harder to move. Most people with asthma notice symptoms that vary over time, such as Wheezing, Cough, Chest Tightness, or shortness of breath. Night waking, reduced exercise tolerance, and tiredness the next day can follow poorly controlled symptoms. Triggers may include viral infections, smoke, dust, exercise, cold air, or allergies such as Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Allergy.

Symptoms are not always loud or dramatic; a persistent cough may be the main sign. Frequent symptoms or increasing reliance on a reliever inhaler can indicate that the treatment plan needs review.

Use preventer and reliever inhalers with the technique prescribed, and keep them available. Follow your written asthma action plan, avoid known triggers where practical, and arrange review if symptoms disturb sleep, limit activity, or return often. A clinician can check inhaler technique and decide whether treatment needs adjusting. Nebuliser Treatment may be used in some urgent settings, but it is not a substitute for an individual action plan.

Call emergency services if you are struggling to speak in full sentences, breathing is rapidly worsening, your lips look blue or grey, you feel exhausted or confused, or your reliever is not helping as directed. Sit upright and follow your action plan while waiting. Do not delay urgent care because symptoms began after an identifiable trigger.

Ask how to recognise your early warning signs, demonstrate your inhaler technique, clarify your action-plan steps, and discuss whether allergies, reflux, infection, or another condition may be adding to your symptoms.
