What should you know about severe gout?

Gout develops when urate crystals collect in and around a joint, provoking inflammation. An attack may bring sudden intense joint pain, swelling, warmth, and sensitivity, often in the foot, ankle, knee, or another joint. Repeated attacks can lead to deposits under the skin, reduced movement, and lasting joint problems.
