What should you know about sensory neuropathic cough?

People may describe a tickle, scratch, burning, or odd sensation followed by bouts of dry coughing. Talking, laughing, cold air, perfume, eating, or a light touch in the throat may trigger it. It can appear after a viral infection, although asthma, acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, bronchiectasis, or another airway problem can produce similar symptoms. Chronic cough is a description of duration, not proof of a nerve cause. A clinician may review the pattern and examine the lungs, nose, throat, and medicines.

Write down triggers, timing, sputum, wheeze, breathlessness, heartburn, nasal symptoms, and recent infections. Sip water, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use gentle breathing with a slow exhale when a tickle starts. Treating reflux, nasal inflammation, or asthma may help when those conditions are present. Do not assume every persistent cough is neuropathic, and do not start prescription nerve medicines without assessment.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or sudden deterioration. Arrange medical review for a cough that persists, disturbs sleep, causes vomiting, comes with fever, unexplained weight change, wheeze, breathlessness, or repeated chest infections. Children with noisy breathing, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or breathing pauses need prompt assessment. A clinician can decide whether tests or specialist input are needed.
