Selsun Blue and hair loss: what to know

Selenium sulfide shampoo is aimed at selected scalp flaking problems. It does not correct every cause of thinning or shedding. Hair loss may involve patchy immune-related loss, inherited pattern thinning, shedding after a body stressor, traction from repeated tension, or scalp ringworm. A flaky scalp can coexist with hair loss without causing all of it. Scratching, inflammation, tight hairstyles, and harsh chemical processing may add breakage or irritation, so the scalp and the hair shaft both need attention.

Use Selsun Blue only as directed for the scalp, and rinse well. Avoid vigorous scratching, tight braids or extensions, and repeated high-heat styling while the scalp is sore. Track whether hair is breaking or coming out from the root, whether loss is patchy or diffuse, and whether there is itch, scale, tenderness, or redness. A clinician can examine the scalp and discuss cause-specific options; finasteride treatment may be considered for some people with pattern hair loss, but it is not suitable for everyone.

Arrange a dermatology appointment for new, persistent, or visibly worsening hair loss, especially with scalp scale, pain, pustules, broken hairs, or smooth patches. Seek prompt care for a rapidly inflamed scalp, spreading crusts, marked swelling, or fever. Early assessment is also useful when loss follows tight styling, because ongoing traction can damage follicles.
