Sebopsoriasis and Hair Loss

Sebopsoriasis combines features of seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis, producing scale, redness and irritation on the scalp. Scratching, inflamed follicles or breaking hairs can make shedding more noticeable, but persistent loss, smooth patches or a widening part may point to another condition. A scalp examination helps distinguish the pattern and check whether the hair roots remain intact.

Follow a clinician's scalp-treatment plan, wash regularly with a suitable medicated cleanser when advised, and loosen scale gently after it softens. Avoid scratching, tight hairstyles, harsh chemicals and vigorous brushing during a flare. Photographing the parting or patches over time can help show change. Possible alternatives include alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia or scalp ringworm. Treatment such as finasteride is appropriate only for selected diagnoses and patients after medical review.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for sudden shedding, smooth bald patches, broken hairs, scalp pain, pus, thick adherent scale or swollen neck glands. Seek prompt care when hair loss follows a painful or spreading scalp rash. Sebopsoriasis should not be assumed to explain every pattern of loss.

Ask which pattern of loss is present, whether the scalp needs testing, how to control inflammation without damaging hair, and when regrowth should be reassessed.
