Seasonal allergies in dogs: what to know

Seasonal allergies in dogs can cause itchy skin, paw licking, ear irritation and recurring symptoms after exposure to outdoor allergens. Dogs may rub their face, chew their feet, scratch their body or develop red, inflamed skin. Allergy signs can overlap with fleas, mites, infection or food reactions, so a veterinary examination is needed before treatment is chosen.

Pollen, mould spores and other environmental particles can trigger an overactive immune response. The skin is often affected first, especially between the toes, around the ears, and on the belly. Repeated scratching can damage the skin and allow bacterial or yeast infection to develop. Watery eyes or a runny nose may occur, while marked breathing difficulty is less typical and needs prompt assessment.

A pattern that returns during a particular season can support an environmental allergy, but it does not prove the cause. Your vet may check for parasites, examine the ears and skin, and discuss the dog’s exposure, diet and previous treatments.

Keep a simple record of when itching starts, which areas are affected and where your dog has been. Wipe paws and coat with a damp cloth after outdoor walks, wash bedding regularly, and keep the home well ventilated. Do not give human antihistamines, creams or essential oils unless a vet has confirmed the product and dose are suitable. Veterinary options may include parasite control, medicated washes, ear treatment or prescription anti-itch medicine.

Arrange an appointment if itching persists, the skin smells, sores appear, the ears become painful, or your dog repeatedly shakes its head. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, collapse, vomiting after a suspected sting, or struggling to breathe. A dog with a sudden breathing problem should not be watched at home while waiting for symptoms to settle.

Ask whether fleas, mites, infection or food sensitivity should be ruled out; which areas need examination; what bathing or paw-cleaning routine is appropriate; and how to recognise a treatment side effect or flare.
