Scalp itching and hair loss

Round smooth patches may occur with alopecia areata; a widening part or receding hairline can fit female or male pattern hair loss. Sudden diffuse shedding may follow a physical or emotional stressor and can fit telogen effluvium. Broken hairs, scaling, tenderness, or swollen areas need attention because scalp ringworm can inflame follicles. Tight hairstyles, extensions, or repeated pulling can cause traction alopecia.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scratching, and loosen hairstyles that pull at the roots. Stop harsh chemical treatments until the scalp settles. Photograph the scalp in good light and note when itching and shedding began, whether patches are smooth or scaly, and any recent illness, stress, medication, or hairstyle change.

Book a dermatology assessment for new, increasing, patchy, or painful hair loss, scaling, broken hairs, or pus. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly swollen areas, or spreading redness.
