What should you know about Sanger next-generation sequencing?

Sanger sequencing reads a selected DNA region and is useful when a specific change is being checked or a finding needs confirmation. Next-generation sequencing reads many DNA fragments in parallel and can examine multiple genes or broader panels from one sample. The result is not a diagnosis by itself: a laboratory and clinical team interpret whether a detected variant is relevant, uncertain, or unrelated to the reason for testing. In cancer care, genomic tumour profiling may look for changes in tumour cells that could inform treatment discussions. In inherited testing, the sample and counselling context are different.

Ask what question the test is intended to answer, whether the sample is blood, saliva, or tumour tissue, and whether a Sanger confirmation may follow a broader panel. Check how uncertain or incidental findings will be reported and whether genetic counselling is available. Results can have implications for relatives when an inherited change is identified. Related uses include Genetic Carrier Screening, Pre-marital Screening, NIPT, PGT-A, PGT-M, and a Breast Cancer Gene Expression Test, but each has a distinct purpose and interpretation.

Sequencing itself does not usually create an emergency, but the reason for testing may require prompt care. Contact your clinical team quickly for new severe symptoms, rapidly worsening neurological changes, or a treatment reaction while awaiting results. Ask when results are expected and whom to call if your condition changes; do not delay urgent assessment while waiting for a genetic report.
