Short answer

A rosacea outbreak is a flare of redness, warmth, burning, sensitivity, or bumps that may follow personal triggers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a flare can look like

During a flare, facial skin may flush more readily and remain red, feel hot or sting, or develop acne-like pimples. Triggers vary, but heat, sunlight, emotional stress, spicy meals, alcohol, vigorous exercise, and irritating skincare can contribute. A flare does not prove that a new product or food is the cause, so record timing and exposures rather than removing many foods at once. Persistent redness between episodes can also occur.

Steps that may calm the skin

Move away from heat, cool the skin gently with a clean damp cloth, and use a bland moisturiser without fragrance. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and seek shade when outdoors. Pause exfoliants, scrubs, fragranced products, and new active ingredients until the skin settles. Do not squeeze bumps. A dermatologist can tailor prescription treatment; azelaic acid therapy may be considered for some inflammatory bumps, while IPL Photofacial or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment may be discussed for selected persistent visible redness.

When a flare needs review

Book an appointment when flares are frequent, last longer than expected, leave ongoing redness, or interfere with sleep or daily activities. Seek prompt medical care for rapidly worsening swelling, fever, pus, severe pain, facial swelling, or eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or a gritty eye feeling. Eye symptoms should not be attributed to a routine skin flare without assessment.

Useful questions

Ask which symptoms represent your rosacea pattern, whether a medicine is intended for flare control or prevention, how to introduce products safely, and whether your eyes need examination. Bring your trigger notes and a list of skincare products.

Questions people ask

How long can a rosacea outbreak last?

Duration varies by person and trigger; ongoing or repeated flares should be reviewed so treatment can be adjusted.

Should I stop all skincare during a flare?

Usually simplify rather than stop everything: keep gentle cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection, and pause irritating actives.
