Remedy for milia on the face

Milia are firm, tiny, pale cysts formed from trapped keratin beneath the surface. They are often clustered around the cheeks, nose, or eyelids and are different from inflamed acne or typical whiteheads. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis by looking at the bumps; this matters because other skin bumps can resemble milia but need different care.

Wash gently, choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen, and avoid picking, needles, abrasive scrubs, or strong home peels. Some people may be offered a carefully selected topical retinoid, but these products can irritate facial skin and require individual advice. A dermatologist can remove a persistent lesion with a sterile procedure such as curettage and cautery, selected according to its location and appearance.

Arrange an assessment if the bumps multiply, become red or painful, bleed, change appearance, or do not resemble your usual milia. Seek prompt advice for swelling near the eye, vision changes, or a rapidly changing lesion. Do not attempt extraction near the eyelid because delicate skin is easy to injure.

Ask whether the bumps are milia, whether a retinoid is suitable for your skin, and which products may be contributing. If removal is considered, ask about healing, aftercare, and how the clinician will protect nearby eye tissue.
