Short answer

Red light sensitivity means ordinary or bright light feels uncomfortable, and its cause depends on the symptoms that accompany it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Also called
Photophobia is the medical term for light sensitivity.
Useful clue
Headache, redness, fever, and vision change help guide assessment.
Immediate concern
Severe symptoms with neck stiffness or confusion need urgent help.

What it may signal

Light sensitivity may occur during migraine, sometimes with a throbbing headache, nausea, or visual disturbance. Redness, watering, discharge, or a gritty feeling can fit conjunctivitis. A new severe headache with fever, neck stiffness, vomiting, confusion, or a rash needs urgent assessment because meningitis is one serious possibility. Light sensitivity on its own cannot identify a diagnosis.

Practical steps

Move to gentle, indirect light and use sunglasses outdoors; avoid driving if glare affects vision. Reduce screen brightness and take regular visual breaks. Keep a brief record of onset, headache, eye redness, fever, medicines, and possible triggers. Do not cover a painful eye for long periods or use leftover prescription drops without advice.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for sudden or severe light sensitivity with eye pain, reduced vision, a severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, confusion, weakness, or repeated vomiting. Same-day advice is sensible for a painful red eye, injury, or symptoms that are worsening. Arrange a routine review if sensitivity keeps returning or interferes with work, reading, or sleep.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pattern fit migraine, conjunctivitis, or another eye condition? Should my eyes or medicines be reviewed? Which warning symptoms should prompt urgent care? How can I manage light exposure safely?

Questions people ask

Is red light itself harmful?

Discomfort does not by itself show that red light is damaging your eyes, but a new or severe sensitivity should be assessed in context.

Should I wear sunglasses indoors?

Short-term use may help during a flare, but constant dark glasses can make ordinary light harder to tolerate for some people. Seek advice if you need them indoors regularly.
