What should you know about Qiagen next-generation sequencing?

Short answer

Qiagen next-generation sequencing reads many DNA or RNA fragments together to identify genetic changes in a sample.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core process
Parallel reading of selected DNA or RNA fragments

Depends on sample, assay, genes and clinical context

What the technology does

A laboratory first extracts genetic material from blood, saliva, a swab, or tumour tissue, depending on the test. Selected regions are prepared as a sequencing library and read in parallel. Software then compares the results with a reference sequence and produces a report about detected variants. Qiagen supplies laboratory technologies used in parts of workflows, but the meaning of a result comes from the specific assay, sample quality, genes examined and clinical context. In cancer care, genomic tumour profiling may look for changes that help classify a tumour or identify a possible treatment option. A result can be positive, negative, uncertain or limited by the amount and quality of material available.

Before giving a sample

Ask what sample is needed, whether a new biopsy is required, which genes or regions will be examined and how results may affect care. Check whether the test is looking for inherited changes, tumour changes, or both; these have different implications for relatives. Tell the team about prior genetic tests and relevant family history. Confirm how results, uncertain findings and incidental findings will be explained, and who can provide genetic counselling. Keep copies of reports because a later clinician may need the exact variant and test method, not just a summary label.

When to contact the care team

Sequencing itself is a laboratory process, so urgent symptoms usually relate to the biopsy or illness being investigated rather than the sequencing read. Contact the service promptly for bleeding, increasing pain, redness, swelling or fever after a tissue sample. Ask for help if a result causes distress or raises concerns about relatives, pregnancy or treatment decisions. A genetic result should be interpreted with a qualified clinician before anyone changes medicine, screening or family plans.

Questions for your doctor

Is this test examining inherited DNA, tumour DNA, RNA, or a combination? What can it detect and what can it miss? Could the result change treatment? Will an uncertain finding be rechecked, and is genetic counselling available?

Questions people ask

Is Qiagen sequencing a diagnosis by itself?

No. The laboratory result is one part of assessment and must be interpreted with the sample source, clinical findings and the purpose of the test.

Can sequencing find every genetic change?

No. Each assay examines selected material and has limits related to coverage, sample quality and the type of change it can detect.
