Postpartum pregnancy hair loss: what to know

Short answer
Postpartum pregnancy hair loss commonly reflects a temporary shift in the hair cycle, but patchy loss, scalp changes, or persistent thinning should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Diffuse shedding across the scalp
- Gentle care
- Avoid tight styles, harsh processing, and high heat
Why shedding can follow pregnancy
Pregnancy can keep more hairs in a growth phase. After delivery, those hairs may enter a resting phase together, so shedding becomes noticeable during washing, brushing, or on clothing. This pattern is called telogen effluvium. It usually looks like diffuse thinning rather than a sharply defined bald patch. Hair loss can also be influenced by low iron, thyroid problems, illness, nutritional strain, autoimmune alopecia, scalp infection, or repeated tension from tight styles. The scalp may look normal in temporary shedding.
Protecting hair while it sheds
Handle wet hair gently, use a wide-toothed comb, and avoid tight braids, extensions, harsh chemical processing, and frequent high heat. Eat regular meals with adequate protein and discuss supplements with a clinician before taking them, particularly while breastfeeding. Take a simple monthly photograph in the same light to observe the overall pattern. Do not use prescription hair treatments without checking their safety for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and your other medicines.
When to arrange an assessment
See a clinician for smooth round patches, eyebrow loss, scaling, sores, pain, marked redness, or broken hairs, since these findings suggest a cause beyond diffuse postpartum shedding. Arrange review if the part continues to widen, shedding remains heavy, or you feel unusually tired, cold, dizzy, or unwell. A clinician may examine the scalp and consider blood tests based on your symptoms and medical history.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pattern fit telogen effluvium or another type of hair loss? Should iron or thyroid status be checked? Which treatments are compatible with breastfeeding, and when should I reassess progress?

Questions people ask
Can postpartum shedding affect the whole scalp?
Yes. A temporary hair-cycle shift often causes diffuse shedding rather than one isolated bald patch.
When should postpartum hair loss be checked?
Arrange assessment for patchy loss, scalp scaling or pain, eyebrow loss, ongoing worsening thinning, or symptoms such as fatigue or dizziness.
