What should you know about pollen asthma?

Asthma airways can narrow and become inflamed after exposure to a trigger. During pollen seasons, symptoms may worsen outdoors, after open-window exposure or alongside Allergic Rhinitis. Pollen-related symptoms may be mistaken for a simple cough, but recurring wheeze, chest tightness or night waking deserves an asthma review.

Asthma symptoms vary between people and from one episode to another. A calm period does not prove that the condition has gone away, so prescribed preventer treatment should not be stopped without advice.

Follow your written asthma action plan and use inhalers exactly as prescribed. Keep reliever medicine available, check inhaler technique, and reduce exposure by keeping windows closed during high-pollen periods and changing clothes after outdoor activity. Use urgent services for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey lips, exhaustion, confusion, or symptoms that rapidly worsen or do not respond to the prescribed reliever.
