Vaccines that help prevent pneumonia

Pneumonia has several possible causes, so there is no single vaccine that covers every cause. Vaccines may target infections such as influenza or COVID-19, which can affect the lungs, and other vaccines may be advised for particular people according to local recommendations. Protection can vary with the vaccine, the organism and the person's health. Vaccination lowers risk but does not replace hand hygiene, avoiding smoke and prompt care when breathing symptoms develop.

Ask a clinician or vaccination service to review your age, pregnancy status, long-term conditions, immune health, previous doses, allergies and current illness. Keep a record of vaccinations and follow the schedule you are given. If you are acutely unwell, ask whether vaccination should wait until recovery. A vaccine cannot treat pneumonia that is already present, so new fever, cough or breathlessness still needs appropriate assessment.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, severe chest pain or inability to drink. After vaccination, urgent assessment is needed for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives or fainting. These symptoms may have causes other than vaccination, but they should not be ignored.

Ask which vaccines are recommended for you, what schedule applies, and which side effects should prompt a call. Tell the clinician about allergies, immune conditions, pregnancy, current medicines and any previous vaccine reaction before receiving a dose.
