Is Pneumonia Contagious?

Short answer
Pneumonia itself is not always contagious, but some infections that cause it can spread through respiratory droplets or close contact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Can it spread?
- Some germs that cause pneumonia can spread; pneumonia has other causes that are not contagious.
- Protect others
- Cover coughs, clean your hands, improve indoor airflow, and limit close contact while unwell.
- Urgent warning
- Breathing difficulty, confusion, blue lips, or severe chest pain needs urgent help.
What contagious pneumonia means
Pneumonia is inflammation and infection in the air sacs of the lungs. It may be caused by bacteria, viruses, or, less often, other organisms. The lung infection does not pass from person to person as a single condition in every case. Instead, a contagious germ may spread and cause anything from a mild respiratory illness to pneumonia, depending on the person’s health and immune response.
Viral illnesses such as COVID-19 and influenza can spread between people and may lead to pneumonia. Bacterial infections can also spread in some circumstances. A cough, fever, chills, or coughing up phlegm can occur with pneumonia, but these symptoms do not establish whether the illness is contagious or identify its cause.
How to reduce spread
If you have a new cough, fever, or another respiratory symptom, limit close contact while you arrange medical advice. Cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands regularly, improve airflow indoors, and avoid sharing cups, utensils, or towels. A well-fitting mask can add protection when you must be near other people. Follow the treatment plan you are given, and take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed; antibiotics do not treat viral infections.
People at higher risk from respiratory infections, including older adults, infants, and those with long-term lung or immune conditions, may need extra precautions. A clinician can help determine whether testing, examination, or treatment is appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, severe chest pain, fainting, or marked drowsiness. These signs can indicate that the lungs or body are not receiving enough oxygen or that a serious infection is developing. Contact a healthcare professional promptly for a worsening cough, persistent fever, shaking chills, dehydration, or coughing up blood. Severe infection can sometimes progress to sepsis and needs rapid assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which cause is most likely, whether you need testing, how long to avoid close contact, and which symptoms should prompt urgent review. Tell the clinician about breathing changes, recent contact with someone ill, travel, long-term conditions, pregnancy, and medicines that affect immunity.

Questions people ask
Can I catch pneumonia from someone who has it?
You may catch a germ that caused another person’s pneumonia, but whether you develop pneumonia depends on the germ and your own health. Not every cause of pneumonia spreads between people.
How long is pneumonia contagious?
There is no single contagious period for all pneumonia. It depends on the underlying infection, symptoms, and treatment. Ask a clinician when close contact is reasonable, especially around people at higher risk.
Should I stay home if I have pneumonia symptoms?
Limit close contact while you arrange medical advice, particularly if you have a new cough or fever. Use cough hygiene and improve airflow around others.
