Plant alkaloids in chemotherapy: what to know

Plant alkaloids are cytotoxic medicines derived from compounds first identified in plants. They interfere with structures or processes that cells need to divide. Cancer cells can be affected, but healthy cells that divide often can also be affected, including cells in the hair follicles, mouth, digestive tract, and bone marrow.

The group includes medicines with different actions and side-effect patterns. A regimen may use one medicine or combine several treatments. The name of the drug, its dose, route, schedule, other medicines, and your general health all shape what you may experience. Your oncology team uses blood tests and symptom checks to guide treatment safely.

Before each treatment, tell the team about numbness, constipation, diarrhoea, mouth soreness, fever, infections, pregnancy possibility, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you take. Follow instructions about fluids, prescribed anti-sickness medicines, and infection precautions. Do not start a herbal product simply because a medicine came from a plant; natural products can alter treatment or cause harm.

Write down the medicine name and the dates of treatment, then record new symptoms. Ask what to do if you miss a dose, cannot keep tablets down, or develop a temperature.

Call the oncology team urgently for fever or chills, difficulty breathing, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, or sudden confusion. Report new tingling, numbness, weakness, trouble walking, or constipation that does not improve, because some plant alkaloids can affect nerves or bowel movement.
