Pimples on the scalp with hair loss

Inflamed follicles can make the scalp sore and may temporarily disrupt nearby hair growth. Scalp ringworm can cause scaling, broken hairs, and inflamed bumps and needs specific treatment. Hair loss may also be separate, such as a smooth patch from alopecia areata, gradual pattern thinning, shedding after a body stress, or breakage from tight hairstyles. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Pay attention to whether hairs are shedding from the root, snapping close to the scalp, or thinning in a defined patch. Itch, scale, pus, tenderness, and recent illness or hairstyle changes are useful details for the examination.

Arrange a clinician or dermatology appointment rather than picking the bumps or starting hair-loss medicine on your own. Use gentle shampoo, avoid tight styles, chemical processing, scratching, and heavy scalp products until the cause is clearer. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or pillowcases if there is scaling or broken hair. Take clear photographs over time to show changes in the scalp and hair density.

Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly enlarging bald patch, marked pain or swelling, pus, thick scale, broken hairs, fever, or swollen glands. Urgent review is sensible when inflammation is spreading or the scalp is becoming very tender. Early examination can help protect follicles when infection or significant inflammation is suspected.

Ask whether the hair loss is shedding, breakage, or follicle damage; whether testing for scalp infection is needed; and which hairstyles, products, or medicines should be paused.
