What should you know about pft and asthma?

Asthma can narrow the airways and make it harder to move air out. A pulmonary function test may measure the amount and speed of air you breathe, sometimes before and after an inhaled reliever. Improvement after the reliever can support the assessment, although one test may not capture symptoms that change from day to day. Cough, wheezing, and chest tightness can have other causes, so results are interpreted with your history.

Follow the testing centre's instructions about meals, smoking, exercise, and usual inhalers. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the clinician arranging the test tells you to. Wear clothing that allows comfortable deep breaths and tell the technician if you feel dizzy or unwell. Keep a record of triggers and symptoms so the result can be considered alongside your daily pattern.

A test appointment is not a substitute for urgent asthma care. Seek immediate help if breathing becomes severely difficult, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, or your reliever is not helping as directed. Arrange a review when night symptoms, wheezing, or activity limitation are recurring, even if a previous test was reassuring.
