Short answer

Persistent postnasal drip is mucus draining into the throat, often from allergy, sinus inflammation, infection, or reflux, and ongoing symptoms merit a review of the cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it can continue

You may feel mucus at the back of the throat, need to clear it, swallow often, sound hoarse, or develop a cough. Allergic Rhinitis can cause clear drainage and sneezing. Chronic Sinusitis or Sinusitis may add blocked nose, facial pressure, reduced smell, or thicker discharge. Acid Reflux can create a lump sensation, throat irritation, or hoarseness even when heartburn is absent. Persistent drainage and cough can overlap, so Chronic Cough may be considered when coughing becomes the main problem.

Symptoms can be affected by seasons, dust, smoke, fragrances, meals, lying down, or dry air. The appearance of mucus does not identify its cause by itself.

Steps that may ease irritation

Avoid smoke and other known irritants, drink fluids, and consider a saline spray or rinse used according to product directions with safe water. Wash bedding regularly if dust is a trigger. Note whether symptoms follow meals, sleep, outdoor exposure, or a particular room. A pharmacist or GP can help choose an allergy or nasal treatment and check whether reflux is contributing. Do not use medicated nasal decongestant sprays beyond the stated instructions.

When to arrange care

Arrange a medical review when drainage continues despite sensible measures, repeatedly disrupts sleep, affects breathing, or comes with facial pain, reduced smell, recurrent nosebleeds, fever, or worsening cough. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling around the eye, confusion, a severe headache with a stiff neck, or coughing blood. Prompt assessment is sensible when symptoms are one-sided, follow an injury, or are accompanied by unexplained weight loss.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pattern suggest allergy, sinus inflammation, reflux, or another cause? Would a nasal examination or allergy review help? Which rinse or spray is safe for me? How should I respond if fever, facial swelling, or breathing trouble develops?

Questions people ask

Can reflux feel like postnasal drip?

Yes. Reflux can irritate the throat and create a lump or mucus sensation without typical heartburn. A clinician can assess the pattern.

How long should persistent postnasal drip be self-managed?

If it does not settle with basic measures, keeps returning, or disrupts sleep or breathing, arrange a review rather than continuing self-treatment indefinitely.
