Persistent cough causing headache

A persistent cough can trigger headache through pressure and muscle strain, but a sudden severe headache or neurological change needs urgent assessment. The headache may come during or just after coughing and improve as the cough settles.

Forceful coughing briefly increases pressure in the chest and head and can tighten the scalp, neck, and shoulder muscles. Poor sleep, dehydration, congestion, or fever may add to discomfort. The cough itself may be linked with reflux, allergic rhinitis, asthma, postnasal drip, or another airway irritation. A new headache pattern should not be dismissed solely because coughing is present.

Pause and sit upright during coughing bouts, take fluids, and avoid smoke or other known irritants. Note whether the pain starts only with cough, how long it lasts, and any visual, balance, speech, strength, or sensation changes. Treating the cause of the cough may reduce strain-related pain. Seek emergency help for a sudden worst-ever headache, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, confusion, seizure, fainting, stiff neck, new vision loss, or severe breathing difficulty. Prompt assessment is also needed for headache after a head injury, coughing blood, persistent vomiting, or a headache that is progressively worsening or present without coughing.

Ask whether the headache fits a cough-triggered pattern, whether your blood pressure and neurological signs need checking, and how the cough should be investigated. Describe its onset, location, severity, duration, triggers, medicines, recent infection, congestion, fever, and any neurological symptoms.
