What should you know about perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis?

Short answer
Perennial allergic rhinitis can persist around the year, while seasonal allergic rhinitis follows exposure to changing outdoor allergens.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Perennial pattern
- Symptoms may occur throughout the year.
- Seasonal pattern
- Symptoms track outdoor allergen exposure.
What the pattern means
Both forms involve an overactive nasal response to otherwise harmless particles. Perennial symptoms may follow indoor triggers such as house-dust mites, mould or animal dander. Seasonal symptoms may appear during periods when outdoor pollen is present. Sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, clear discharge and reduced sense of smell are typical. Itchy, watery eyes may occur with allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic rhinitis is not the same as a bacterial infection, although persistent congestion can affect sleep, hearing pressure or sinus drainage.
What you can do
Notice where and when symptoms begin, then reduce the relevant exposure: keep windows closed when outdoor allergens are high, wash after outdoor activity, and reduce bedroom dust where practical. A clinician or pharmacist can explain nasal sprays, antihistamines or saline rinses and how to use them correctly. Do not share medicines or continue a decongestant spray beyond its advised period. If cough or wheeze accompanies your nasal symptoms, mention it because asthma can coexist.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical review if symptoms disturb sleep, work or exercise, keep returning despite sensible measures, or need frequent medication. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms after an exposure. Facial pain with fever, one-sided blockage, or thick discharge that persists may need assessment for sinusitis.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms be perennial, seasonal, or both? Which trigger-reduction steps fit my home and work setting? How should I use a nasal spray, and what symptoms would suggest asthma or sinusitis?
