PCOS and a late period

PCOS may make ovulation happen later than expected or not happen in a cycle. Because bleeding usually follows ovulation, the period may arrive late, be lighter or heavier, or be skipped. [Irregular Periods](/symptoms/irregular-periods/) are a common pattern with PCOS, but a late period can also follow pregnancy, stress, illness, thyroid changes, breastfeeding, weight change or a medicine. The calendar alone cannot identify the cause.

If pregnancy is possible, test and follow the instructions for repeating the test if needed. Write down the expected date, actual bleeding, spotting, pelvic symptoms and recent changes in health. A clinician can review your cycle pattern and decide whether tests for pregnancy, thyroid function or other hormones are useful. If late cycles are frequent, discuss a plan to regulate bleeding or protect the womb lining.
