Short answer

PCOS can cause coarse facial or body hair when increased androgen activity changes the growth pattern of hair follicles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Hair pattern
Coarse hair may appear on the face, chest, abdomen or back.
Diagnosis
Hair growth alone cannot confirm PCOS; cycle history and other findings matter.

Why PCOS can change hair growth

Androgens are hormones present in all bodies, but their effects vary. In PCOS, higher androgen activity or greater follicle sensitivity can turn fine hairs into darker, thicker hairs, often on the chin, upper lip, chest, abdomen or back. This pattern is called hirsutism. The change may develop gradually, and hair growth can occur alongside acne or scalp hair thinning.

PCOS often affects ovulation as well as androgen activity. Irregular Periods, Missed Period or Periods Stopped can reflect infrequent ovulation, while Trouble Getting Pregnant may occur when ovulation is unpredictable. Hair growth alone does not diagnose PCOS; thyroid problems, medicines and other hormone conditions can produce similar changes.

Options to discuss

A clinician may review the timing and speed of hair growth, menstrual pattern, medicines and family history, then examine the skin and order selected hormone tests. Hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, threading or laser treatment can address visible hair, while prescription treatment may reduce androgen effects or regulate cycles. The Combined Pill may be considered for some people who do not want pregnancy, but suitability depends on health history and contraceptive needs. PCOS care can also address ovulation and metabolic health.

When to seek care promptly

Arrange prompt assessment if coarse hair appears suddenly, progresses rapidly, or comes with a deep voice, increased muscle bulk, severe acne, scalp hair loss or clitoral enlargement. These features can have causes other than PCOS. Seek care for very heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain or pregnancy concerns as well.

Questions for your doctor

Could PCOS explain my hair growth and cycle changes? Which other causes should be checked? Would hormone testing help? Which hair-removal or prescription options fit my goals? How would treatment change if I am trying to become pregnant?

Questions people ask

Does unwanted hair always mean PCOS?

No. Hair growth can reflect normal variation, medicines or other hormone conditions, so a clinician considers the whole pattern.

Will treating PCOS remove existing hair?

Hormone treatment may slow new growth, while physical hair-removal methods address hair already present. Results vary by method and person.
