What should you know about pain and light sensitivity in one eye?

A surface irritation, conjunctivitis, a corneal problem, or inflammation deeper in the eye can cause pain and sensitivity to light. Migraine can also produce light sensitivity, although it often has a broader headache pattern. The symptom combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Redness, discharge, a gritty feeling, headache, nausea, recent injury, or contact-lens use are useful details for a clinician.

Arrange prompt medical or optometry advice, particularly if the pain is new or worsening. Do not rub the eye, share towels, or use someone else’s drops. Remove contact lenses and avoid wearing them until a clinician says it is safe. Sunglasses or a dim room may reduce discomfort temporarily, but they should not delay assessment when vision is affected. Seek emergency care for sudden loss or blurring of vision, severe eye pain, a markedly red eye, an irregular pupil, injury or chemical exposure, or severe headache with vomiting, confusion, fever, or neck stiffness. These features can occur with serious eye or neurological problems, including meningitis, and need immediate evaluation. Do not drive if vision is impaired.
